A Second Home In Central London

The owners of this small, central London pad are living in Europe and the Far East. For weekends and holidays the destination is often London, where they spent their student days. The flat had been on the rental market for some years and was in tired condition. The task was to simplify the space, creating a light, harmonious mini-home where colours and furniture would suit the setting and size of the flat.

The light-grey colour pallet was chosen for the entire space, hallway, sitting room and both bedrooms, creating a quiet base where all walls, doors & architrave was painted in the same colour. The sisal flooring throughout the flat, except for the veranda, was chosen to match the walls so the base of the space would flow with ease, providing a silent background. For the relatively large veranda octagonal tiles where chosen, fitting for the Edwardian building, and a slightly darker wall colour with an even darker colour for the very high ceiling, adding a sense of warmth to the ‘outdoor’ space.

The furniture had to accompany the muted colour scheme with a contrasting, generous dark red chair in lush velvet by Eero Saarinen, setting a focal point and personal tone to the otherwise very minimal selection. The flat-weave Gelim rug in dark blue and light grey added character, making a strong impact without disturbing the space.

The easy chairs on the veranda can be added to the sitting room if extra chairs are required for guests. Artwork will be added both for the sitting room and the veranda. Timeless, easy styling makes this space comfortable and relevant for many years to come. A small flat should be kept clutter free to have space to breathe and offer a true sanctuary in a busy city.
